How to overcome temptation
Introduction

James 1:14-15
Temptation comes when we have an evil desire. An evil desire is like a match. Something happens and immediately we have a thought or a desire to do something that is wrong. It could be to say a mean thing about someone else. It could be to want what someone else has. There are many different kinds of temptations. When that match is ignited, a small flame appears. What Allah wants is that we blow out that match as soon as it is ignited. The problem arises when we do not blow out the flame, but let it burn. When it burns, it starts a fire. Our evil desire gets stronger and then we act out that evil desire. We allow that evil desire to move us to think, say, or do the wrong thing. That is when sin happens; and the result of sin is death - spiritual death.

Proverbs 30:15-16
In the Proverbs of the Prophet and King Suleiman (PBUH), we see that fire is never satisfied. It always wants more to burn. It is the same with evil desires. They never are satisfied. They always want more. This is why we need to extinguish the match of temptation whenever it is ignited.

We are to stop putting wrong thoughts in our minds and fill our minds with the thoughts and words of Allah. As we do this Allah's Spirit changes us. Look at what this verse teaches:

Romans 8:7-9
These verses make it clear. If we think the wrong things, then we are enemies of Allah. We cannot obey Allah's Sharia. However, if the Spirit of Allah is living in us, we have the guidance and the power to think what is right, and we live in ways that please Allah.
