Introduction

Every lover of Allah faces temptations. Temptations come to all human beings. This post looks at what Allah's holy Word says about temptations, and how we are to overcome them.

Biblical References

James 1:14-15

Temptation comes when we have an evil desire. An evil desire is like a match. Something happens and immediately we have a thought or a desire to do something that is wrong. It could be to say a mean thing about someone else. It could be to want what someone else has. There are many different kinds of temptations. When that match is ignited, a small flame appears. What Allah wants is that we blow out that match as soon as it is ignited. The problem arises when we do not blow out the flame, but let it burn. When it burns, it starts a fire. Our evil desire gets stronger and then we act out that evil desire. We allow that evil desire to move us to think, say, or do the wrong thing. That is when sin happens; and the result of sin is death - spiritual death.

Proverbs 30:15-16

In the Proverbs of the Prophet and King Suleiman (PBUH), we see that fire is never satisfied. It always wants more to burn. It is the same with evil desires. They never are satisfied. They always want more. This is why we need to extinguish the match of temptation whenever it is ignited.

1 Corinthians 10:13

This verse teaches us that we are not alone whenever we find we are tempted. Temptations come to everyone. And Allah is faithful, and Allah gives to all who love him the way to be victorious over temptation.

Romans 12:2

Temptation is a battle of the mind. We often lose when temptation comes, because we do not prepare our minds before the temptation arises. We are to stop putting wrong thoughts in our minds and fill our minds with the thoughts and words of Allah. As we do this Allah's Spirit changes us. Look at what this verse teaches:

Philippians 4:8-9

Victory over temptation comes through the power of a renewed mind. The way to renew our minds is to fill our minds with good, true, and pure thoughts. As we do this, Allah's Spirit will change our hearts and our desires.

Romans 8:5-6

In these verses we see that those who live by the power of Allah's Spirit think spiritual things. Those who live in the power of nafs il amara bilsu find that their thoughts are wrong. It is up to us what we allow into our minds.

Romans 8:7-9

These verses make it clear. If we think the wrong things, then we are enemies of Allah. We cannot obey Allah's Sharia. However, if the Spirit of Allah is living in us, we have the guidance and the power to think what is right, and we live in ways that please Allah.

Conclusion

Temptations come to everyone. Those who have the Spirit of Allah within them, they find they prepare themselves for the battle with temptation by renewing their minds. They spend time learning and memorizing the Words of Allah. When temptation comes they find they have the desire and the power to resist that temptation. It is an amazing work that Allah does within us. He does it through the power of the Spirit who lives within us and whom Hazrat Isa al Masih sent down upon us.
